Filaments for 3D printers
Polylactic acid (PLA) is an ecological polymer deriving from the polymerization of lactic acid derived from dextrose, which can be obtained from corn, sugar cane, tapioca roots, potatoes, wheat, beets. It therefore derives from totally renewable sources. It is also totally biodegradable by composting (EN 13432), non-toxic, resistant, has a pleasant smell and is easy to use. In the non-oriented form (thread for 3D printers) it is a material with high stiffness, but rather brittle. It also does not allow use at temperatures above 60°C. Naturally transparent or semi-transparent, it is marketed in various colours.
Recommended printing parameters:
- Nozzle temperature : 170-210°C – depending on printing speed
- Plate temperature : from room temperature up to 50°C
The temperatures recommended above are indicative and must be modified according to your printing setup. PLA is a hygroscopic material. Be sure to use filaments that have not absorbed moisture. If in doubt, dry at a temperature of 60°C for 3 hours to reduce the initial moisture content to 1/2 and extend the treatment if necessary. It is recommended to operate in an adequately ventilated environment. Do not sleep in the room where you print. FiLO PLA is supplied vacuum packed with moisture absorber.
HIPS (High Impact PolyStyrene) is a thermoplastic material consisting of polystyrene and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). Used in 3D printing mainly for the execution of supports (being soluble in limonene), it actually has physical and mechanical characteristics that make it extremely interesting. It is a printable material with a wide temperature range, therefore the risk of degradation in the nozzle. Does not drip, excellent bridging, very little shrinkage, does not absorb humidity. The printed objects are opaque, thus presenting an aesthetically uniform surface. They are also impact resistant. HIPS does not contain Acrylonitrile, considered the potentially dangerous component of ABS. During printing, it is practically odourless. It tends to adhere to almost all materials, including elastomers. It is flexible enough to allow the construction of tall and narrow supports (pillars) without breaking due to vibration.
Recommended printing parameters:
- Nozzle temperature : 210-240°C – depending on printing speed
- Plate temperature : 60-90°C
- The temperatures recommended above are indicative and must be modified according to your printing setup. It is recommended to avoid drafts during the printing process. Preferably keep the printing area closed. However, it is recommended to operate in an adequately ventilated environment. Do not sleep in the room where you print.
- PLA 3D-850 is a PLA specially designed for 3D printing, which has mechanical characteristics superior to normal PLA and which are close to those of ABS. In particular, it is very performing from the point of view of fragility and resistance to a higher temperature compared to a traditional PLA. Naturally transparent or semi-transparent, it is marketed in various colours.
Recommended printing parameters:
- Nozzle temperature : 185-225°C – depending on printing speed
- Plate temperature : from room temperature up to 50°C
The temperatures recommended above are indicative and must be modified according to your printing setup. PLA is a hygroscopic material. Be sure to use filaments that have not absorbed moisture. If in doubt, dry at a temperature of 50°C for 6 hours. It is recommended to operate in an adequately ventilated environment. Do not sleep in the room where you print. FiLO PLA 3D-850 is supplied vacuum packed with moisture absorber.
PLA 3D-870 was specifically designed for 3D printing. It has exceptional mechanical characteristics, superior to ABS, low shrinkage, exceptional brilliance and transparency in the NATURAL colour. If annealed at 100° in the oven after printing (crystallization annealing) the model acquires exceptional mechanical characteristics. Naturally transparent, it is marketed in various colors.
